Why Do Kids Love the Same Book Over and Over?

You pick out a popular children's book, something you're sure your child will love. You bring it home, excited to surprise them… only to watch them flip through a few pages and never pick it up again.

This happens to most of us at some point.

Instead, children often have one favourite book — the one they keep coming back to. No matter how many new stories you offer, they return to that same familiar one, every single time.

And there's a reason for this.

It's about comfort, not stubbornness

Children find comfort in familiar stories. They know them so well that they can stop you midway and continue on their own. Sometimes they even "read" the book by themselves without actually knowing the words — because they've heard it so many times they remember what comes next, page after page.

And this pretending to read gives them something else too — a quiet confidence. The feeling that they can do what the grown-ups do. That they are readers. This isn't just an early step towards reading — it's often where a love of books begins.

In a way, a favourite book works just like a comfort toy. Just as a child holds on to a soft toy when they feel overwhelmed, a familiar story gives them a sense of safety and reassurance. Hearing the same story makes them feel calm and settled — they already know what's coming, and that knowing itself is what gives them that feeling of safety.

They're building a little relationship with it

Over time they begin to form small connections with the book — a favourite page, a favourite character, or even a favourite line they love hearing read out loud.

There's nothing to worry about here.

What you can do

The best thing you can do is not discourage this habit. Let them enjoy their favourite book as much as they want.

And just keep a variety of other books around the house. Leave them within easy reach, without any pressure to read them.

Children are naturally curious. When they're ready, they'll begin exploring new books on their own.

And then one day…

You'll notice they've slowly moved on from that one favourite book… and are ready to discover many more stories.

But it's still a good idea to keep that old favourite close.

You never know when they might want to come back to it.
