Snuggle Up Tight Book Review – A Gentle Bedtime Story for Toddlers Afraid of the Dark

Snuggle Up Tight by Melanie Joyce book cover – bedtime picture book for toddlers

When my 4-year-old refused to sleep alone and wouldn’t walk into a dark room without the lights on, bedtime had become a daily struggle. That’s when I discovered Snuggle Up Tight by Melanie Joyce, illustrated by Gaby Murphy.

Why This Book Is Special

Snuggle Up Tight is a padded board book ideal for children aged 3–5. What truly stood out to me was:

·        how beautifully the story flows through bright, expressive illustrations.

·       Even before my daughter could read independently, she understood the story just by looking at the pictures— something I also noticed with I Am a Kitten, another beautifully illustrated board book for young readers.

·        Each page contains one or two short, simple sentences written in a gentle rhyming pattern, much like The Itsy Bitsy Duckling, which also makes read-aloud time soothing and engaging. This keeps little ones engaged and makes it perfect for bedtime reading.

What My Child Learned

The story follows a baby panda who feels scared after hearing strange nighttime noises once tucked into bed. Through the story, children learn that nighttime sounds aren’t monsters or ghosts — just normal things happening around them.

At first, my daughter enjoyed the pictures and slowly began understanding the idea of a comforting bedtime routine. By age 4, she loved listening to the full story. At 5, she started reading it by herself — which made this book a wonderful long-term investment.

Did It Cure Her Fear of the Dark?

Not completely — but it changed how she thinks about it.

She now understands that fear is just a feeling, and there are no scary creatures hiding in the dark. That emotional shift made bedtime calmer and more reassuring for both of us.
